IMMIGRATION
CRISIS WORLDWIDE - DREAMERS KEPT AWAY FROM DREAMS
Dreamers
are facing now a danger higher as ever in the USA due to the Trump
administration. They are at risk of being deported from their home to their
country of origin - to an unknown land. These children and young adults known
as dreamers - ranging from 15 to 36 years old - were taken at a young age
mostly from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala by their parents escaping from
poverty to the land of opportunities.
The title
"dreamer" can be derived from this thought as well: youngsters
looking for the American Dream, dreaming for a better future. However, in reality, the phrase is an
abbreviation of the "Development, Relief and Education for Alien
Minors" Act which would have offered permanent residency for those who
arrived illegally to the country as minors and which the Obama administration
failed to pass. Thus the DACA program was introduced under Obama's presidency
which temporarily allow these immigrants to live, study and work in America.
However in order to be in this program, illegal immigrants had to register
which certainly was a scary step for them - to be put on the map. But as a DACA
recipient, Ximena Magnana says: they "gave a trust to the
administration".
American Alien
DACA
is attacked by many Republicans since it was created as an alternative when the
DREAMER Act was rejected. Republicans believe this was an executive overreach thus
it should be scrapped, however anti-immigrant feelings also play along. Donald
Trump during his campaign promised to put an end to illegal immigration with
radical steps if necessary. He claimed to expel every unauthorized immigrant
and to build a wall to the Mexican border. The number of undocumented
immigrants is about 11 million of which the number of DACA recipients are about
700-800,000.
In
September Trump softened his previous threats and gave a 6 months deadline to
the Congress to create a solution. Meanwhile, both Republican and Democratic
politicians started to stand with the preservation of DACA and even 350 leaders
of influential companies wrote an open letter in which they argued that
Dreamers boost competitiveness. In fact, Dreamers have a strong bond and
emotion to their country, the United States, because they have to work twice as
hard to reach their goals and dreams. Many believe that is why they deserve to
be the part of the community. After all, "community" describes the
best the American spirit.
Decisions Far, Far Away
In
January Trump implied that he allows the staying of undocumented immigrants
brought to the country underage if the Democratic fraction votes the budget to
strengthen the Southern border. However, the latest news are that Trump
threatened to veto any attempts to save DACA - even those that would fund the
border wall. The deadline given by the President has expired couple of days ago
but the decision to end DACA has been stalled by the courts thus no reform has
been made.
In
this uncertainty live now many young immigrants who put faith in their country.
The advocacy of the Dreamers focuses on the failures of the Democrats since they
have been willing to sacrifice very little to mend the legislative background
of DACA.
Hungarian immigration
The
situation at the other side of the Atlantic sets an example to the European
immigration crisis. With hundred thousands of illegal immigrants arriving to
this continent and the criticized Hungarian border wall in the South, it could
be a good idea to examine the American situation for the political elite. In a
couple of years any European country may find itself in an impossible situation
like this. Those immigrant children who may arrive and stay will see Hungary as
their home - will the political leadership send them back when the immigrant
rate will be at record highs? A multinational state will meet major
difficulties at the end of the day - USA example shows.
